47 Movies Filmed on Stunning Beaches You Should Visit

  1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Where? St Croix in the US Virgin Islands.
When to go? Visit St Croix all year round.

While most of this movie is set behind bars, the dream that helps Andy persevere and eventually escape is the dream of escaping to a simple life on the Mexican beach of Zihuatanejo on the Pacific ocean. In reality the movie shots of the beach we see at the end of the film were shot in the Caribbean on Sandy Point National Wildlife Park on the south western tip of St Croix in the US Virgin Islands.

Tip: Sandy Point doesn't have beach facilities or even any shade, and is only open on weekends. The park closes entirely from April until August when it's turtle nesting season. Still there are plenty of other beaches on St Croix you can visit all year round.
