If you are sailing, windsurfing, fishing, surfing etc. in Gili Air don't forget to check the tide and wind and wave conditions
Located just off the northwestern coast of Lombok, the Gili Islands are a popular destination for those seeking relaxation, adventure, and unforgettable experiences. Gili Air is the second smallest of the three main islands and is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant marine life, and friendly locals. There are no motorized vehicles on Gili Air, you can get around on foot, by bicycle or with one of the horse and carts that ply the island.
The waves here, while lacking the size of the waves on the south coasts of Bali and Lombok, can be decent enough to surf at reefs off the Gili islands. The breaks are smaller since they are more protected from the south and south west swells, however if the swells are big enough in Bali you'll find them getting as far as the Gili islands.
While Gili Air has a lot going for it, some find it a bit rough around the edges. There's a problem with trash in some parts, but also a problem with plastic trash being burned generating those unpleasant and potentially harmful fumes. Also while the island is generally peaceful and quiet, be careful where you choose to stay - some areas have loud beach parties until 4am making it difficult to get a good nights sleep. Then there are also mosques that play the call to prayer over loud speakers through most of the day and night. There are also several abandoned resorts probably a result of the covid lockdowns.
Gili Air boasts stunning beaches with powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. The island is surrounded by coral reefs teeming with diverse marine life, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. While some areas of the beach may have coarse sand or pebbles due to the coral reefs nearby, most spots offer soft sand perfect for sunbathing or relaxing under the shade of palm trees.
Some recommended beach activities on Gili Air include:
There are several beachfront resorts and hotels to choose from, catering to various budgets and preferences. Some popular options include:
The eastern side of Gili Air is the most developed, offering a wide range of accommodations, restaurants, and beach bars. This area is also known for its vibrant nightlife scene.
The western side of the island is more secluded and offers a peaceful ambiance with fewer crowds. It's an excellent choice for those looking for tranquility and privacy.
The southern part of Gili Air features budget-friendly accommodations with easy access to popular snorkeling spots.
