The Blue Lagoon in Malta is a popular beach destination known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning natural beauty. Located on the small island of Comino, it is an ideal spot for a relaxing holiday with a variety of beach activities to choose from.

Beach Type

At the Blue Lagoon, you will find a mix of white powdery sand and rocky areas. The sandy sections are perfect for sunbathing and relaxing, while the rocky areas provide excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving. The presence of rocks and nearby reefs makes this location a haven for marine life, attracting various fish species that make these activities even more enjoyable.

Beach Activities

  1. Snorkeling: The clear waters and abundant marine life make snorkeling a must-try activity at the Blue Lagoon. You'll have the chance to spot colorful fish, octopuses, and other sea creatures as you explore the underwater world.
  2. Scuba Diving: For those who want to delve deeper into the sea, scuba diving is another popular option. There are several dive sites around Comino Island suitable for beginners as well as experienced divers.
  3. Boat Tours: Taking a boat tour around Comino Island is an excellent way to explore the area's beautiful coastline and visit other nearby beaches such as Santa Marija Bay and San Niklaw Bay.
  4. Swimming: The calm waters of the Blue Lagoon are perfect for swimming or simply floating around in the refreshing turquoise water.
  5. Paddleboarding & Kayaking: For those seeking more adventurous water sports, paddleboarding or kayaking allows you to explore hidden caves along the coastline while enjoying stunning views.

Accommodation

There are no hotels or resorts directly on Comino Island; however, there are plenty of accommodation options on neighboring islands Malta and Gozo. Both islands have numerous hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals to suit different budgets and preferences.

  • Gozo: A quieter and more rural island, Gozo is ideal for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat. Some popular areas to stay include Victoria, Xlendi, and Marsalforn.
  • Malta: For those who prefer more lively surroundings with easy access to restaurants, shops, and nightlife, consider staying in Mellieha or Sliema on the island of Malta. These towns are also well-connected by public transport for easy access to Comino Island.

Beach Amenities

While the Blue Lagoon itself is a natural beach destination without extensive amenities, you can find some basic facilities such as:

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent
  • Food kiosks selling snacks and beverages
  • Restrooms near the beach area
  • Boat rentals for water sports activities

Remember that the Blue Lagoon can get quite crowded during peak season since it's a popular tourist spot. It's best to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to enjoy the beach with fewer crowds.

The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon, hidden away on Comino island, is accessible by a short boat ride from Malta main island and perfect for an unforgettable day trip. The Blue Lagoon is famous for crystal clear blue azure waters over a white sandy seabed and beautiful ragged rocky coastline. There isn't much space for sunbathing, so be aware of crowds during weekends and peak summer holiday periods. Infact you will need to find a rock to lay down your towel and sunbathe, as the sandy area is very limited. The lagoon is picture perfect during the summer and has actually been on screen in movies and music videos in recent years. If you like to snorkel don't forget to bring your gear, this is one of the best snorkel spots in Malta.

The Blue Lagoon Climate

The Blue Lagoon is best visited during June, July, August and September when both the sea temperature and air temperature make for a perfect day at the beach. In April and May sunbathing will be pleasant but the low sea temperature will make swimming a little bracing.
